Partner characters could provide contextual dialogue based on where you're looking ("Not that switch, the other one!", "Who you lookin' at?", "Hey, my eyes are up here!"). And will eye-tracking recognize squinting? If so, maybe that could be used to bring certain details into clearer focus, or to zoom in.īut what could be really cool is what eye-tracking could do to enhance interactions with NPCs, to further bring them to life in ways that enhance the feeling of being present in another reality. You could also stare at something for a couple seconds to unlock data on it (à la Metroid Prime), or maybe there's some kind of pseudo "retinal scan" mechanic to open a door. Maybe even close your eyes and use sounds and haptics to "blind fight" to avoid being fooled by visual illusions. ![]() Hell, you could aim laser eyes as Superman, move objects to wherever you're looking as a Jedi (or as Magneto!), or close your eyes as Indiana Jones to avoid having an opened Ark of the Covenant melt your face off. It should also be possible to use eye-tracking to assist with aiming or even locomotion (look somewhere and hold a button to move there). There are natural limitations to the kinds of gameplay mechanics you could base around the feature, but already we're hearing about games using it for menu navigation (Horizon: CotM), weapon selection (Firewall Ultra), triggering enemy movement (Switchback VR) and cluing you into interactive objects (Moss). In looking into all the upcoming games and hearing about PSVR2 hands-on experiences, one thing that has me really interested is eye-tracking. Paper Beast for example is one of my favorite PS VR games and I highly doubt we're gonna see it ported over given that by all accounts the game bombed, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make if it's for the good of the platform (and Paper Beast in particular still has a PC VR version, so not a huge deal). Of course, what sucks is that inevitably not every game is going to be ported over. This is generally a limitation of most BC solutions yes, but in VR visuals and performance are especially more important than on flatscreen, not to mention that PS4 games are far closer to PS5 ones than PS VR games will be to VR2. Resident Evil 7 next to a native version of Resident Evil 8 is just not going to be able to compare visually, and neither is basically any other game compared to proper VR2 versions. Even in the case they magically figured BC out, you're still going to be limited to PS VR-era resolutions and performance.Try making it clear to a player that buys a VR2 headset that actually only certain specific games are backwards compatible. That leaves you with the headset-only games which tbf still include a bunch of great ones (RE7, WipEout). as the DualSense or DS4 can't be tracked with the new headset, but then you still have the PS Move games, without a standard layout or anything, which would change game-to game. First, we can write off anything that uses the DS4 tracking like Astro Bot, Hitman, Statik, etc. The inconsistency across games would be something else.To be fair I was more worried about this before knowing how many PS VR2 upgrades there would be, which seem like a ton Encourages developers to make proper VR2 versions that use VR2 features instead of just going "oh well it's BC". ![]() Honestly after giving it a lot of thought I think going with no BC was the right choice for multiple reasons: I bet I've posted this before here, but here's my short list of games I'd love to see make the jump to VR2:Īce Combat 7 missions (or a full VR game!!!)Īnd.announce 3D bluray support you cowards! I think the sense controllers being lightyears ahead of the move controllers from the previous version will get me more into "hand-interactive" games rather than sticking to mostly seated / traditional controller affairs. GT7 and No Man's Sky should keep me occupied at launch. That tabletop game Demeo actually seems really cool so thinking about that. Horizon will be amazing no doubt, but I am not a fan of the IP so the asking price is a bit steep. The limited mode in Sport was so fun that I'll be happy with anything as long as it's at least equal to that experience and based on footage it will be even more. I'm starting to think about what I'll be getting at launch and I'm leaning towards grabbing RE Village even though I could barely stand to play VII previously due to it freaking me out. Ordered a Pulse headset to avoid fiddling with the earbuds. ![]() As a huge fan of PSVR1 I'm starting to get more and more hyped for this thing. ![]()
